A Simple Guide to Coravin Wine

How Coravin works and why it matters

If you love wine but hate feeling pressured to finish a bottle once you open it, or struggle to get through it all at once, Coravin could completely change the game for you. Coravin is a clever wine-preservation system that lets you pour a glass (or two) without uncorking the bottle, so the rest can stay fresh for weeks, months, or even years. It’s ideal for anyone who savours wine slowly, enjoys variety, or simply wants to make a bottle last for much longer.

How does Coravin work?

  1. The Coravin system uses a thin, hollow needle that pierces through the cork without removing it.

  1. When you press the trigger, the system injects inert argon gas into the bottle. Argon is tasteless and odourless, and because it’s heavier than air, it sits on top of the wine and forms a protective layer, which prevents oxygen from reaching the wine

  1. You pour the wine as usual, then, when you withdraw the needle, the cork reseals itself  and the remaining wine stays protected.

  1. So, you get a glass now, while preserving the rest of the bottle just as if it had never been opened.

Because the cork stays intact, wines preserved using Coravin continue to evolve naturally and so you’re not locking in a snapshot of flavour, but letting the bottle age and stay fresh over time.

How do you use a Coravin wine opener?

  1. Insert a Coravin capsule

Start by loading a Coravin Pure™ Argon Capsule into the system. These capsules provide the pressurised gas needed to pour wine without exposing the bottle to oxygen. Make sure it’s screwed in firmly to prevent leaks.

  1. Position the system on the bottle

Place the Coravin clamp around the neck of the bottle and ensure it’s secure. The bottle should be upright and stable on a flat surface.

  1. Insert the needle into the cork

Press the handle or trigger (depending on your model) to guide the thin, medical-grade needle straight through the cork. The needle is designed to glide in smoothly without damaging the cork.

  1. Pressurise the bottle

Tilt the bottle slightly and press the trigger to release a small amount of argon gas from the capsule. This gas creates gentle pressure inside the bottle.

  1. Pour the wine

Once pressurised, wine flows through the needle and out of the spout. You can pour as you normally would.

  1. Remove the needle

When finished, pull the system straight up to remove the needle from the cork. Natural cork will reseal within moments, keeping the remaining wine protected.

  1. Store the bottle normally

Because no oxygen has entered the bottle, you can store it upright and enjoy the rest of the wine weeks, months or even years later (or up to 4 weeks for sparkling wines).

What makes Coravin so great?

  • With Coravin, you can pour a glass from a good bottle without commitment, so it’s ideal for expensive wines, cellared bottles, or sharing over time if you don’t want to commit to opening a full bottle.

  • It allows you to taste vintage or rare bottles without the fear of spoiling it, even some users report wines tasting unchanged even decades after first using Coravin.

  • You can sample multiple wines over time, which is perfect for collectors or anyone testing wine by the glass.

  • It helps to reduce waste, as if you rarely finish whole bottles, Coravin lets you enjoy just a glass.

  • For infrequent wine drinkers or lovers of variety, Coravin can transform how you enjoy wine by offering more flexibility, less waste and better pacing.

Coravin FAQs

Are Coravin capsules recyclable?

Yes, the argon (and CO₂, for sparkling systems) capsules are made from recyclable metal.

Can you Coravin champagne (sparkling wine)?

Yes, but only with the dedicated Coravin Sparkling system. Instead of argon, it uses CO₂ capsules and a special stopper to preserve fizz and flavour. After pouring, you will need to reseal the bottle with the stopper and repressurise with CO₂, keeping carbonation and freshness for up to four weeks.

You should not use the standard still-wine Coravin needle system on sparkling wine as that risks losing bubbles or damaging the pressure balance in the wine.

Do Coravin capsules expire?

The CO₂ capsules used for sparkling wine have a printed expiry which is usually about three years. That expiry is for regulatory compliance; in reality, using a slightly out-of-date capsule won’t harm the wine.

For standard argon capsules, there’s no strict expiration, but you’ll know a capsule is empty when you press the trigger and don’t hear the usual hissing.

Does Coravin really work?

Yes, when used properly. Independent blind taste tests with wine professionals have repeatedly shown that wines tasted with Coravin can not be told apart from unopened bottles, sometimes even years later.

How long does a Coravin bottle last after first pour?

Using the main Timeless system properly, a bottle can often remain fresh for as long as it would if unopened because you’re not exposing it to oxygen, so the wine keeps evolving like a sealed bottle.

Using a simpler system (like Pivot, which replaces the cork with a stopper) can preserve wine for ~4 weeks which is great for everyday wines you'll finish a bit later.

With sparkling wine using the Sparkling system,  if it’s properly re-pressurised after each pour and sealed with the stopper, it can last up to ~4 weeks.

Coravin is an excellent choice for you if…

  • You want flexibility - maybe a glass now and more later.

  • You like to sample wines slowly, or enjoy tasting different bottles over time.

  • You collect expensive wines and don’t want to finish the bottle in one sitting.

  • You want to reduce wine waste.

How to choose the right Coravin system for you

Timeless

Best for traditional wine lovers who might taste over weeks, months, or years. This gives you maximum wine preservation.

Pivot

A more affordable option, good for everyday wines you’ll finish within a month; easier set-up but offers shorter preservation.

Sparkling

If you enjoy Champagne, Prosecco, or any sparkling wine, this system preserves bubbles and flavour up to ~4 weeks.

You should pair whichever system you choose with a breathable wine storage spot which should be dark, cool, and stable temperature (your wine should thank you for it!).

Is Coravin worth it?

If you care about wine, whether that’s enjoying a glass now and another later, preserving a special bottle, or simply sipping slowly, Coravin is absolutely worth considering. It’s not just a gimmick, it’s actually a thoughtful, practical tool that gives you flexibility and keeps your wine in great shape long term.

Used properly, Coravin’s technology preserves wine in a way that traditional bottle-openers simply can’t match. It offers both convenience and respect for the craft of winemaking.
