History of Swarovski

For more than a century, Swarovski has set supreme standards in producing the world’s most celebrated and precisely-cut crystals, which are treasured for their genuine radiance and captivating depth.

The proud heritage of a scintillating Swarovski crystal can be traced back to 1892, when Daniel Swarovski – an entrepreneurial scientist – invented a revolutionary crystal-cutting machine to best all existing manual methods and created a home for the brand in the sleepy Austrian village of Wattens, where Daniel Swarovski was confident that he could not only produce the world’s finest crystals, but also protect his method and recipe from any competitors.

Upon brand conception, Daniel Swarovski was determined to harness the beauty and wonder of the crystal and to utilise the stones within a myriad of varying materials and forms, each with their own unique splendour and functionality. It was Daniel Swarovski’s dream to enhance the world by bringing sparkle and happiness into the everyday lives of many; yet it was his undeniable passion for perfection that motivated him to create a plethora of patented artisanal techniques and technologies over the years, to consistently drive his business forward into the future.

Now a phenomenal global empire with over 26,000 employees and a board of 4th generation family members, Swarovski has enjoyed tremendous success throughout the last century. Most notably the brand has worked with masters of couture, including Schiaparelli, Chanel and Dior – the latter for whom the Aurora Borealis crystal effect was developed in 1956.

Swarovski has also dressed stars including Marlene Dietrich and Madonna, designed pieces for world-famous red-carpet ceremonies and award shows as well as costumes and props for fantastical film productions such as Moulin Rouge, Die Another Day, Phantom of the Opera and Oceans 13.

To this day, Swarovski has expanded its brand profile into eight streams of design and manufacturing; including Swarovski Elements, for which the company has collaborated with designers including Prada, Alexander McQueen, Jimmy Choo, Yves Saint Laurent and Armani.

Swarovski’s Schonbek Worldwide Lighting Inc. produces flawless handmade crystal chandeliers and decorative lighting, some of which may be found in the Palace of Versailles and the Metropolitan Opera in New York.

Swarovski Kristallwelten in Wattens is Andre Heller’s envisaged embodiment of a crystal; a multi-sensory world of crystal, this instalment art gallery and museum allows Swarovski collectors to immerse themselves in the beauty of a cut crystal and has attracted in excess of 8 million visitors to date.

Swarovski also supplies Swareflex with the most advanced glass reflectors to increase visibility and road safety and last but by no means least, Swarovski Entertainment is the company’s most recent venture into the film industry, which produced the captivating tale of romance in an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet in 2012. Masters of jewellery design, Swarovski’s talented teams work years in advance to create timelessly elegant jewellery pieces and inspired collections.

Utilising a myriad of vibrant colours, textures and exclusively patented techniques, Swarovski’s design teams continue to bring fresh inspiration to their crystal jewellery collections. With each new collection, Swarovski’s jewellery pieces constantly evolve, whilst maintaining a classic style that never fails to enchant customers.

In the spirit of innovation and creativity, Swarovski’s designers also continue to conceive new trend-led collections seasonally – often collaborating with legendary designers, including Christopher Kane, Kenneth Jay Lane and Jean Paul Gaultier (to name but a few) – to satiate the younger, fashion-focused Swarovski consumers.
